Geh lieber in ein Haus, wo man trauert, als dorthin, wo gefeiert wird. Denn im Trauerhaus wird man daran erinnert, dass der Tod auf jeden Menschen wartet. Wer noch lebt, sollte sich dies zu Herzen nehmen!

In meinem vergänglichen Leben habe ich viel gesehen: Manch einer richtet sich nach Gottes Geboten und kommt trotzdem um; ein anderer will von Gott nichts wissen, aber er genießt ein langes Leben.
Sei nicht allzu fromm und übertreib es nicht mit deiner Weisheit! Warum willst du dich selbst zugrunde richten?
Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?
Sei aber auch nicht gewissenlos und unvernünftig! Warum willst du sterben, bevor deine Zeit gekommen ist?

Es ist gut, wenn du dich an beides hältst und die Extreme vermeidest. Wer Ehrfurcht vor Gott hat, der findet den richtigen Weg.
It is good that you should take hold of this, and from that withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them.
Weisheit beschützt einen Menschen mehr, als zehn Machthaber einer Stadt ihm helfen können.
Wisdom gives strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.
Doch es ist kein Mensch auf der Erde so gottesfürchtig, dass er nur Gutes tut und niemals sündigt.

Ich habe versucht, dies alles mit meiner Weisheit zu erforschen; ich wollte Einsicht erlangen, aber sie blieb mir unerreichbar fern.
All this I have tested by wisdom. I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me.

Dabei habe ich gemerkt: Etwas ist noch schlimmer als der Tod, nämlich jene Frau, die einem Fangseil gleicht, deren Liebe dich einfängt wie ein Netz und deren Arme dich umschließen wie Fesseln. Ein Mann, der Gott gefällt, kann sich vor ihr retten, aber der Gottlose wird von ihr gefangen.
