and kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife’s full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Aber Petrus durchschaute ihn. »Hananias«, fragte er, »warum hast du es zugelassen, dass der Satan von dir Besitz ergreift? Warum hast du den Heiligen Geist belogen und einen Teil des Geldes unterschlagen?
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land?
Niemand hat dich gezwungen, das Land zu verkaufen. Es war dein Eigentum. Und auch nach dem Verkauf hättest du das Geld behalten können. Wie konntest du dich nur auf so etwas einlassen! Du hast nicht Menschen belogen, sondern Gott selbst.«
“While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”
Nach diesen Worten brach Hananias tot zusammen. Alle, die davon hörten, waren entsetzt.
And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it.

The young men got up and covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.

Now there elapsed an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
Petrus fragte sie: »Ist das hier die ganze Summe, die ihr für euren Acker bekommen habt?« »Ja«, antwortete sie, »das ist alles.«
And Peter responded to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for such and such a price?” And she said, “Yes, that was the price.”
Da erwiderte Petrus: »Warum habt ihr beiden beschlossen, den Geist des Herrn herauszufordern? Sieh doch, die Männer, die deinen Mann begraben haben, kommen gerade zurück. Sie werden auch dich hinaustragen.«
Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.”
Im selben Augenblick fiel Saphira vor ihm tot zu Boden. Als die jungen Männer hereinkamen und sahen, dass sie tot war, trugen sie Saphira hinaus und begruben sie neben ihrem Mann.
And immediately she fell at his feet and breathed her last, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
Die ganze Gemeinde aber und alle, die davon hörten, erschraken zutiefst.
And great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard of these things.
In Gottes Auftrag vollbrachten die Apostel viele Zeichen und Wunder. Die ganze Gemeinde traf sich immer wieder im Tempel in der Halle Salomos, fest vereint im Glauben.
At the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s portico.
Die anderen, die nicht zur Gemeinde gehörten, wagten nicht, sich ihnen anzuschließen; sie sprachen aber mit Hochachtung von ihnen.
But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, the people held them in high esteem.

And all the more believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly added to their number,

to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on any one of them.
Selbst aus den umliegenden Städten Jerusalems strömten die Menschen herbei. Sie brachten ihre Kranken und solche, die von bösen Geistern geplagt waren, und alle wurden gesund.
Also the people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing people who were sick or afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all being healed.
Der Hohepriester aber und seine Gefolgsleute, die Sadduzäer, waren neidisch auf die ständig wachsende Gemeinde von Christus und beschlossen deshalb, nicht länger tatenlos zuzusehen.
Imprisonment and Release
But the high priest rose up, along with all his associates (that is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy.
Kurzerhand ließen sie die Apostel festnehmen und ins Gefängnis werfen.
They laid hands on the apostles and put them in a public jail.
Aber in der Nacht öffnete ein Engel des Herrn die Gefängnistüren und führte die Apostel hinaus.
But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and taking them out he said,
»Geht in den Tempel«, sagte er, »und verkündet dort allen die Botschaft vom neuen Leben durch Jesus! Lasst nichts davon weg!«
“Go, stand and speak to the people in the temple the whole message of this Life.”
Also gingen die Apostel frühmorgens in den Tempel und lehrten dort in aller Öffentlichkeit. Zur selben Zeit berief der Hohepriester mit seinen Gefolgsleuten den Hohen Rat samt den führenden Männern des Volkes zu einer Sitzung ein. Dann ließen sie die Apostel zum Verhör holen.
Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple about daybreak and began to teach.

Aber die waren nicht mehr im Gefängnis. So kehrten die Beauftragten des Hohenpriesters zurück und meldeten:
But the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported back,
»Die Gefangenen sind fort. Die Türen des Gefängnisses waren sorgfältig verschlossen, und die Wachen standen davor. Aber als wir die Türen öffneten, war niemand in der Zelle.«
saying, “We found the prison house locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we had opened up, we found no one inside.”
Der Befehlshaber der Tempelwache und der Hohepriester waren ratlos: Wie sollte das alles noch enden?
Now when the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what would come of this.
Da kam jemand mit der Nachricht herein: »Die Männer, die ihr ins Gefängnis geworfen habt, sind schon wieder im Tempel und lehren dort!«
But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”
Sofort zog der Befehlshaber der Tempelwache mit seinen Männern zum Tempel und holte die Apostel. Allerdings wendeten sie keine Gewalt an, weil sie sonst fürchten mussten, vom Volk gesteinigt zu werden.
Then the captain went along with the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).
Die Apostel wurden in den Gerichtssaal vor den Hohen Rat gebracht, wo der Hohepriester sie verhörte.
When they had brought them, they stood them before the Council. The high priest questioned them,
»Haben wir euch nicht streng verboten, jemals wieder öffentlich zu predigen und euch dabei auf diesen Jesus zu berufen?«, begann er. »Und doch habt ihr dafür gesorgt, dass inzwischen ganz Jerusalem von eurer Lehre spricht. Ihr wollt uns sogar für den Tod dieses Menschen verantwortlich machen!«
saying, “We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.”
Petrus und die anderen Apostel erwiderten: »Man muss Gott mehr gehorchen als den Menschen!
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
Der Gott unserer Vorfahren hat Jesus, den ihr ans Kreuz geschlagen und getötet habt, von den Toten auferweckt.
“The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross.
Gott hat ihn durch seine Macht zum Herrscher und Retter erhoben, damit das Volk Israel zu Gott umkehren kann und ihnen ihre Sünden vergeben werden.
“He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
Das werden wir immer bezeugen und auch der Heilige Geist, den Gott allen gegeben hat, die ihm gehorchen.«
“And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
Diese Worte versetzten die Mitglieder des Hohen Rates in maßlose Wut, und sie wollten die Apostel hinrichten lassen.
Gamaliel’s Counsel
But when they heard this, they were cut to the quick and intended to kill them.
Da stand Gamaliel auf, ein Pharisäer und im Volk hoch angesehener Gesetzeslehrer. Er ließ die Apostel für kurze Zeit hinausbringen;
But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time.
dann wandte er sich an die Versammelten: »Ihr Männer von Israel, seid vorsichtig und überlegt euch genau, was ihr gegen diese Leute unternehmt.
And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you propose to do with these men.
Schon früher glaubten manche, etwas Besonderes zu sein, wie Theudas zum Beispiel. Etwa vierhundert Männer schlossen sich ihm an. Aber er wurde getötet, und von seinen Leuten ist keiner mehr zu finden. Niemand spricht mehr von ihnen.
“For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined up with him. But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.
Danach, zur Zeit der Volkszählung, unternahm Judas aus Galiläa einen Aufstand. Er konnte viele Anhänger gewinnen. Aber auch er kam um, und alle, die sich ihm angeschlossen hatten, wurden auseinandergetrieben.
“After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census and drew away some people after him; he too perished, and all those who followed him were scattered.
Deshalb rate ich euch in dieser Sache: Lasst diese Männer in Ruhe! Geht nicht gegen sie vor! Wenn es ihre eigenen Ideen und Taten sind, für die sie sich einsetzen, werden sie damit scheitern.
“So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown;
Steht aber Gott dahinter, könnt ihr ohnehin nichts dagegen unternehmen. Oder wollt ihr am Ende als Leute dastehen, die gegen Gott kämpfen?« Das überzeugte alle.
but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.”
Man rief die Apostel wieder herein, ließ sie auspeitschen und verbot ihnen noch einmal, in der Öffentlichkeit zu sprechen und sich dabei auf Jesus zu berufen. Dann wurden sie freigelassen.
They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.
Die Apostel aber verließen den Hohen Rat voller Freude darüber, dass Gott sie dazu auserwählt hatte, für Jesus Verachtung und Schande zu ertragen.
So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.
