Nun floh David aus der Siedlung der Propheten in Rama. Heimlich suchte er Jonatan auf und fragte ihn: »Was habe ich nur falsch gemacht? Was habe ich verbrochen gegen deinen Vater? Warum will er mich umbringen?«
David and Jonathan
Then David fled from Naioth at Ramah and went to Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my crime? How have I wronged your father, that he is trying to kill me?”

»Wie kommst du darauf?«, versuchte Jonatan seinen Freund zu beruhigen. »Niemand will dich töten! Du weißt genau, dass mein Vater nichts unternimmt, ohne es vorher mit mir zu besprechen, sei es wichtig oder unwichtig. Warum sollte er mir ausgerechnet seine Mordabsichten verheimlichen? Nein, David, das siehst du falsch.«
“Never!” Jonathan replied. “You are not going to die! Look, my father doesn’t do anything, great or small, without letting me know. Why would he hide this from me? It isn’t so!”
Doch David widersprach: »Natürlich weißt du nichts davon, denn dein Vater hat längst gemerkt, dass du mein Freund bist. Darum will er dich nicht damit belasten. Doch ich sage dir: So wahr der HERR lebt und du selbst lebendig vor mir stehst: Mein Leben hängt an einem seidenen Faden!«
But David took an oath and said, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said to himself, ‘Jonathan must not know this or he will be grieved.’ Yet as surely as the Lord lives and as you live, there is only a step between me and death.”
Jonatan erklärte: »Ich will alles für dich tun.«
Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you.”
Darauf sagte David: »Morgen beginnt doch das Neumondfest. Da sollte ich eigentlich als Gast beim königlichen Festmahl erscheinen. Doch ich komme wohl besser nicht, sondern verstecke mich bis übermorgen Abend irgendwo in der Nähe.
So David said, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon feast, and I am supposed to dine with the king; but let me go and hide in the field until the evening of the day after tomorrow.
Wenn dein Vater nach mir fragt, dann sag ihm: ›David hat mich dringend gebeten, ihn für kurze Zeit in seine Heimatstadt Bethlehem gehen zu lassen, weil seine Familie das jährliche Opferfest feiern will.‹
If your father misses me at all, tell him, ‘David earnestly asked my permission to hurry to Bethlehem, his hometown, because an annual sacrifice is being made there for his whole clan.’
Ist dein Vater einverstanden, dann wissen wir, dass mir keine Gefahr droht. Wird er aber zornig, so bedeutet es, dass er Böses im Schilde führt.
If he says, ‘Very well,’ then your servant is safe. But if he loses his temper, you can be sure that he is determined to harm me.
Bitte tu mir diesen Gefallen! Denk an den Freundschaftsbund, den du mit mir vor dem HERRN geschlossen hast. Doch wenn ich wirklich etwas verbrochen habe, so töte du mich, nur liefere mich nicht deinem Vater aus.«
As for you, show kindness to your servant, for you have brought him into a covenant with you before the Lord. If I am guilty, then kill me yourself! Why hand me over to your father?”
Jonatan wehrte ab: »So etwas werde ich nie tun! Sobald ich merke, dass mein Vater deine Ermordung beschlossen hat, werde ich es dir sagen.«
“Never!” Jonathan said. “If I had the least inkling that my father was determined to harm you, wouldn’t I tell you?”
David fragte: »Aber wie erfahre ich, ob dein Vater zornig geworden ist oder nicht?«
David asked, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?”
Jonatan schlug vor: »Komm, wir gehen zusammen hinaus auf das Feld!« Als sie draußen waren,
“Come,” Jonathan said, “let’s go out into the field.” So they went there together.
fuhr er fort: »Ich verspreche dir vor dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, bis übermorgen um diese Zeit herauszufinden, wie mein Vater über dich denkt. Wenn er dir freundlich gesinnt ist und ich vergesse, es dir zu melden,
Then Jonathan said to David, “I swear by the Lord, the God of Israel, that I will surely sound out my father by this time the day after tomorrow! If he is favorably disposed toward you, will I not send you word and let you know?
dann soll der HERR mich schwer dafür bestrafen. Wenn ich aber merke, dass mein Vater dich töten will, so will ich dir auch das mitteilen und dich nicht zurückhalten, damit du dich in Sicherheit bringen kannst. Möge der HERR dir beistehen, wie er früher meinem Vater beigestanden hat!
But if my father intends to harm you, may the Lord deal with Jonathan, be it ever so severely, if I do not let you know and send you away in peace. May the Lord be with you as he has been with my father.
Doch ich habe auch eine Bitte an dich: Sei mein Leben lang so gütig zu mir, wie der HERR es dir gegenüber ist! Bring mich nicht um, wenn du einmal König bist!
But show me unfailing kindness like the Lord’s kindness as long as I live, so that I may not be killed,
Mehr noch: Verschone auch meine Nachkommen und entziehe ihnen niemals deine Gunst, selbst dann nicht, wenn der HERR alle deine Feinde restlos beseitigt hat.«
and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family — not even when the Lord has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”
So schloss Jonatan mit David und dessen Familie einen Bund und sagte: »Möge der HERR alle deine Feinde zur Rechenschaft ziehen!«
So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the Lord call David’s enemies to account.”
Er bat David: »Schwör mir, dass du dich so sicher daran halten wirst, wie du mich heute als deinen Freund liebst.« Jonatan liebte David nämlich wie sein eigenes Leben.
And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.
Dann erklärte Jonatan seinen Plan: »Morgen ist das Neumondfest. Natürlich wird man dich vermissen, wenn dein Platz leer bleibt.
Then Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the New Moon feast. You will be missed, because your seat will be empty.
Geh deshalb am Abend nach dem Fest hinunter auf das Feld, wo du dich schon einmal versteckt hast. Setz dich dort hinter den großen Steinhaufen.
The day after tomorrow, toward evening, go to the place where you hid when this trouble began, and wait by the stone Ezel.
Ich werde dann wie zufällig herauskommen und drei Pfeile in deine Richtung schießen, als wollte ich ein bestimmtes Ziel treffen.
I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as though I were shooting at a target.
Wie gewohnt werde ich dann meinen Diener losschicken, um die Pfeile wieder zusammenzusuchen. Und nun pass auf! Sage ich zu dem Jungen: ›Die Pfeile liegen nicht weit weg von mir, bring sie her!‹, dann kannst du ruhig aus deinem Versteck hervorkommen. Du weißt dann, dass du nichts zu befürchten hast, so wahr der HERR lebt.
Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them here,’ then come, because, as surely as the Lord lives, you are safe; there is no danger.
Sage ich meinem Diener aber: ›Die Pfeile liegen weiter weg‹, dann heißt das, dass du sofort fliehen musst, ja, dass der HERR selbst dich von hier wegschickt.
But if I say to the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you,’ then you must go, because the Lord has sent you away.
Was wir jedoch heute ausgemacht haben, das soll für immer gelten. Der HERR selbst ist Zeuge unseres gegenseitigen Versprechens.«
And about the matter you and I discussed — remember, the Lord is witness between you and me forever.”
Wie verabredet versteckte David sich auf dem Feld. Am Tag des Neumondfestes setzte sich der König zum Festmahl an den Tisch.
So David hid in the field, and when the New Moon feast came, the king sat down to eat.
Er saß wie gewohnt an seinem Platz an der Wand neben Abner und gegenüber von Jonatan. Davids Platz aber blieb leer.
Saul sagte an diesem Tag nichts dazu, denn er dachte: »David kann sicher aus irgendeinem Grund den Reinheitsvorschriften nicht genügen.«
Saul said nothing that day, for he thought, “Something must have happened to David to make him ceremonially unclean — surely he is unclean.”
Doch als Davids Platz auch am zweiten Feiertag leer blieb, fragte Saul seinen Sohn: »Weißt du, warum dieser Sohn Isais weder gestern noch heute zum Essen gekommen ist?«
But the next day, the second day of the month, David’s place was empty again. Then Saul said to his son Jonathan, “Why hasn’t the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?”
Jonatan erwiderte: »Er hat mich dringend gebeten, ihn zu entschuldigen, damit er nach Bethlehem gehen kann.
Jonathan answered, “David earnestly asked me for permission to go to Bethlehem.
Er sagte mir: ›Wir feiern zu Hause das jährliche Opferfest unserer Familie. Mein ältester Bruder wollte mich unbedingt dabeihaben. Willst du mir einen Gefallen tun, dann befreie mich von meinen Verpflichtungen, damit ich meine Verwandten besuchen kann.‹ Ich habe es ihm erlaubt, und darum war er gestern und heute nicht hier.«
He said, ‘Let me go, because our family is observing a sacrifice in the town and my brother has ordered me to be there. If I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away to see my brothers.’ That is why he has not come to the king’s table.”
Als Saul das hörte, packte ihn der Zorn, und er brüllte Jonatan an: »Du Hurensohn! Meinst du eigentlich, ich habe noch nicht gemerkt, dass du mit diesem Sohn Isais unter einer Decke steckst? Schämen solltest du dich! Und auch deine Mutter, die einen solchen Nichtsnutz zur Welt gebracht hat!
Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you?
Solange dieser Kerl noch lebt, bist du deines Lebens nicht sicher. Und Hoffnungen auf den Königsthron brauchst du dir dann auch keine zu machen. Los, lass ihn sofort hierherbringen, denn er muss sterben!«
As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!”
»Was hat er eigentlich getan?«, fragte Jonatan. »Warum soll er hingerichtet werden?«
“Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” Jonathan asked his father.
Als Antwort schleuderte Saul wütend seinen Speer nach seinem Sohn, um ihn damit zu durchbohren. Da merkte Jonatan, dass Saul fest entschlossen war, David zu töten.
But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David.
Voller Zorn stand er vom Tisch auf und aß an diesem Tag keinen Bissen mehr. Er war tief getroffen, weil sein Vater seinen Freund David so beschimpft hatte.
Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger; on that second day of the feast he did not eat, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David.
Am nächsten Morgen ging Jonatan wie verabredet auf das Feld hinaus. Ein junger Diener begleitete ihn.
In the morning Jonathan went out to the field for his meeting with David. He had a small boy with him,
»Lauf schon mal los!«, befahl Jonatan. »Du sollst die Pfeile suchen, die ich gleich abschieße.« Der Junge rannte los, und Jonatan schoss seinen ersten Pfeil weit über ihn hinaus.
and he said to the boy, “Run and find the arrows I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
Als der Junge dort ankam, wo er den Pfeil zu finden meinte, rief Jonatan: »Lauf nur, der Pfeil muss noch weiter geflogen sein. Los, beeil dich!« Schließlich fand der Diener den Pfeil und brachte ihn seinem Herrn zurück.
When the boy came to the place where Jonathan’s arrow had fallen, Jonathan called out after him, “Isn’t the arrow beyond you?”
Natürlich verstand er nicht, was sein Herr mit diesen Worten beabsichtigt hatte, denn nur David und Jonatan wussten Bescheid.
(The boy knew nothing about all this; only Jonathan and David knew.)
Jonatan übergab seinem Diener Bogen und Pfeile und schickte ihn damit in die Stadt zurück.
Then Jonathan gave his weapons to the boy and said, “Go, carry them back to town.”
Sobald der Junge verschwunden war, kam David aus seinem Versteck hinter dem Steinhaufen hervor. Er warf sich vor Jonatan zu Boden und verbeugte sich dreimal. Sie küssten sich zum Abschied, und beiden kamen die Tränen. Noch während David heftig weinte,
After the boy had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone and bowed down before Jonathan three times, with his face to the ground. Then they kissed each other and wept together — but David wept the most.
sagte Jonatan: »Geh in Frieden, David! Vergiss nie, was wir einander im Namen des HERRN geschworen haben. Es soll für immer gelten, auch für deine und meine Nachkommen. Der HERR selbst ist unser Zeuge.«
