The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”

Als Elisa einmal nach Schunem kam, lud ihn eine wohlhabende Frau des Dorfes zum Essen ein. Von da an war er jedes Mal in ihrem Haus zu Gast, wenn er in Schunem vorbeikam.

Eines Tages sagte die Gastgeberin zu ihrem Mann: »Ich bin sicher, dass der Mann, der oft zu uns kommt, ein heiliger Bote Gottes ist!
She said to her husband, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God.
Wollen wir ihm nicht im oberen Stockwerk ein kleines Zimmer einrichten? Wir stellen ihm ein Bett, einen Tisch, einen Stuhl und eine Lampe hinein. So kann er sich zurückziehen und etwas ausruhen, wenn er uns besucht.«
Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.”
Als Elisa wieder einmal nach Schunem kam, ging er in sein neues Zimmer hinauf und ruhte sich aus.

Dann befahl er seinem Diener Gehasi: »Geh zu unserer Gastgeberin und sag ihr: ›Du hast dir für uns so viel Mühe gemacht. Können wir auch etwas für dich tun? Sollen wir vielleicht beim König oder beim Heerführer ein gutes Wort für dich einlegen?‹« Gehasi ging hinunter und rief nach der Frau. Als er sein Angebot vorgetragen hatte, wehrte sie ab: »Ach, es geht mir doch gut. Ich habe so viele Verwandte hier in der Stadt.«
He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.” So he called her, and she stood before him.

“About this time next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.”
“No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!”

Doch einige Zeit später wurde die Frau schwanger und brachte ein Jahr nach diesem Gespräch einen Sohn zur Welt, genau wie Elisa es vorausgesagt hatte.

Der Knecht brachte den Jungen nach Hause zu seiner Mutter. Sie setzte sich hin und nahm ihn auf den Schoß. Gegen Mittag aber starb er.

Da trug sie das tote Kind ins obere Schlafzimmer hinauf, legte es auf das Bett des Propheten und schloss den Raum ab. Dann eilte sie auf das Feld hinaus

She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.”
Erstaunt fragte ihr Mann: »Warum willst du ihn ausgerechnet heute besuchen? Es ist doch kein Feiertag, weder Neumond noch Sabbat!« Sie ging gar nicht auf die Frage ein, sondern verabschiedete sich kurz
“Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.”
“That’s all right,” she said.

und lief zurück, um die Eselin zu satteln. Dann befahl sie ihrem Diener: »Treib das Tier tüchtig an, damit wir schnell vorankommen. Halt erst an, wenn ich es sage!«
She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.”
So kam sie zum Propheten Elisa an den Berg Karmel. Als er sie von weitem kommen sah, sagte er überrascht zu seinem Diener Gehasi: »Da kommt ja unsere Gastgeberin aus Schunem!

Doch kaum war sie bei Elisa auf dem Berg, da fiel sie vor ihm nieder und umklammerte seine Füße. Gehasi wollte sie wegstoßen, aber Elisa wehrte ab: »Lass sie! Irgendetwas bedrückt sie sehr, aber ich weiß nicht was, denn der HERR hat mir nichts gesagt.«

Da brach es aus ihr heraus: »Habe ich dich, mein Herr, etwa um einen Sohn gebeten? Habe ich damals nicht sogar abgewehrt und gesagt, du solltest mir keine falschen Hoffnungen machen?«
“Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”
»Gehasi, mach dich sofort fertig zum Aufbrechen!«, befahl Elisa seinem Diener. »Nimm meinen Stab und eile so schnell wie möglich nach Schunem. Wenn du unterwegs jemandem begegnest, dann bleib nicht stehen, um ihn zu begrüßen, und wenn dich einer anredet, gib keine Antwort! Geh und leg meinen Stab auf das Gesicht des Jungen!«
Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”
Doch die Mutter bestand darauf, dass Elisa selbst mitkam. Sie sagte: »So wahr der HERR lebt und so wahr du lebendig vor mir stehst: Ohne dich gehe ich nicht nach Hause!« Da gab er nach und ging mit ihr.
But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.
Gehasi war vorausgeeilt und hatte den Stab auf das Gesicht des toten Jungen gelegt. Doch ohne Erfolg — der Junge bewegte sich nicht und gab auch keinen Laut von sich. Da kehrte Gehasi wieder zurück, um es Elisa zu melden. Unterwegs traf er ihn und berichtete: »Er ist nicht aufgewacht!«
Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”
Als Elisa in Schunem angekommen war, ging er allein hinauf in sein Zimmer und verriegelte die Tür hinter sich. Noch immer lag das Kind regungslos auf dem Bett. Elisa betete zum HERRN.

Dann legte er sich so auf den toten Jungen, dass sein Mund auf dem Mund des Kindes lag, seine Augen auf dessen Augen und seine Hände auf dessen Händen. Während er so dalag, wurde der Leib des Toten langsam warm.
Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm.
Der Prophet stand auf, verließ das Zimmer und ging im Haus umher. Schließlich kehrte er zurück und legte sich noch einmal auf den Jungen. Da nieste das Kind siebenmal und schlug die Augen auf.
Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
Elisa rief nach Gehasi und befahl ihm: »Hol schnell unsere Gastgeberin!« Als sie das Zimmer betrat, sagte Elisa zu ihr: »Hier ist dein Sohn.«

Die Frau warf sich vor dem Propheten zu Boden. Dann ging sie zusammen mit ihrem Sohn hinunter.

Elisa kehrte nach Gilgal zurück. Zu der Zeit herrschte im Land eine Hungersnot. Als Elisa einmal vor den Prophetenjüngern in Gilgal sprach, befahl er seinem Diener: »Setz den großen Topf auf und koch den Prophetenjüngern etwas zu essen!«

Da ging einer der jungen Männer hinaus, um auf dem Feld nach etwas Essbarem zu suchen. Er fand ein wildes Rankengewächs mit Früchten. Davon pflückte er so viele, wie er in seinem Mantel tragen konnte, und eilte damit zurück. Er schnitt die Früchte in Stücke und warf sie in den Topf, obwohl keiner von ihnen das Gewächs kannte.
One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine and picked as many of its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were.
Das Gemüse wurde an die Männer verteilt. Doch schon nach ein, zwei Bissen konnten sie nichts mehr essen und schrien entsetzt: »Elisa, du Bote Gottes, das Essen ist giftig, wir werden alle sterben!«
The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.
Elisa befahl: »Bringt mir etwas Mehl!« Er schüttete das Mehl in den Topf, rührte um und sagte: »So, nun könnt ihr es an alle austeilen und essen.« Jetzt war das Gericht genießbar und richtete keinen Schaden an.
Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.
Ein anderes Mal kam ein Mann aus Baal-Schalischa und brachte dem Propheten einen Beutel frische Getreidekörner und die ersten zwanzig Gerstenbrote vom Korn der neuen Ernte. Elisa sagte zu seinem Diener: »Verteile es an die Prophetenjünger, damit sie sich satt essen können!«
