David befahl Joab und den führenden Männern des Volkes: »Geht und zählt die Israeliten von Beerscheba im Süden bis Dan im Norden, und dann erstattet mir Bericht! Ich möchte wissen, wie viele es sind.«
So David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan, and bring me word that I may know their number.”
Doch Joab wandte ein: »Der HERR möge sein Volk noch hundertmal größer werden lassen! Sie alle sind doch sowieso deine Untertanen, mein König! Warum verlangst du so etwas? Warum willst du Israel diese Schuld aufbürden?«
Joab said, “May the LORD add to His people a hundred times as many as they are! But, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord seek this thing? Why should he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”
Doch der König blieb bei seinem Entschluss, trotz aller Einwände, die Joab vorbrachte. Und so führte Joab die Volkszählung in ganz Israel durch und kam dann nach Jerusalem zurück.
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore, Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
Dort legte er David das Ergebnis vor: In ganz Israel gab es 1.100.000 wehrfähige Männer, davon kamen 470.000 aus dem Stamm Juda.
Joab gave the number of the census of all the people to David. And all Israel were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword; and Judah was 470,000 men who drew the sword.
Die Stämme Levi und Benjamin hatte Joab nicht mitgezählt. Denn er hatte den Befehl des Königs ohnehin nur mit Widerwillen befolgt.
But he did not number Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s command was abhorrent to Joab.
Gott aber missfiel es, dass David das Volk hatte zählen lassen. Darum wollte er Israel bestrafen.
God was displeased with this thing, so He struck Israel.
Da betete David zu Gott: »Meine Schuld ist groß. Bitte vergib mir! Wie dumm bin ich gewesen!«
David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now, please take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”
Da befahl der HERR dem Seher Gad, der in Davids Dienst stand:
The LORD spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,
»Geh zu David und sag ihm: Drei Strafen legt der HERR dir vor. Wähl dir eine davon aus!«
“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, “I offer you three things; choose for yourself one of them, which I will do to you.”’”
Gad ging zu David und gab ihm die Botschaft des HERRN weiter. Er fragte ihn: »Was wählst du?
So Gad came to David and said to him, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Take for yourself
Drei Jahre Hungersnot? Oder drei Monate, in denen du von deinen Feinden verfolgt und schließlich besiegt wirst? Oder wählst du drei Tage, in denen der HERR das Land bestraft? Dann wütet die Pest in Israel, und der Engel des HERRN bringt Elend über das ganze Land. Überleg dir, was ich dem antworten soll, der mich zu dir geschickt hat!«
either three years of famine, or three months to be swept away before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you, or else three days of the sword of the LORD, even pestilence in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.’ Now, therefore, consider what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.”
David entgegnete: »Ich habe große Angst. Aber ich will lieber dem HERRN als den Menschen in die Hände fallen, denn er ist sehr barmherzig.«
David said to Gad, “I am in great distress; please let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are very great. But do not let me fall into the hand of man.”
Da ließ der HERR in Israel die Pest ausbrechen. 70.000 Menschen kamen dabei um.
So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel; 70,000 men of Israel fell.
Gott schickte seinen Engel auch nach Jerusalem, um die Stadt zu vernichten. Doch kaum hatte der Engel sein Werk begonnen, da hatte der HERR Mitleid mit den Menschen in ihrem Elend, und er befahl: »Genug damit! Hör auf, das Volk zu töten!« Der Engel stand gerade auf dem Dreschplatz des Jebusiters Arauna.
And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it; but as he was about to destroy it, the LORD saw and was sorry over the calamity, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough; now relax your hand.” And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
David sah, wie der Engel des HERRN dort zwischen Himmel und Erde stand und das Schwert über Jerusalem erhoben hatte. Da warfen sich David und die führenden Männer der Stadt zu Boden. Sie alle trugen Bußgewänder aus grobem Stoff.
Then David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, with his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, covered with sackcloth, fell on their faces.
David betete: »Ich allein trage die Schuld! Habe nicht ich befohlen, die Volkszählung durchzuführen? Ich habe gesündigt, aber das Volk, meine Herde, trifft keine Schuld! Darum, HERR, mein Gott, bestrafe mich und meine Verwandten; doch verschone das Volk vor dieser Plage!«
David said to God, “Is it not I who commanded to count the people? Indeed, I am the one who has sinned and done very wickedly, but these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God, please let Your hand be against me and my father’s household, but not against Your people that they should be plagued.”
Da sagte der Engel des HERRN zum Propheten Gad: »Fordere David auf, zum Dreschplatz des Jebusiters Arauna zu gehen und dort einen Altar für den HERRN zu bauen.«
David’s Altar
Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
David machte sich auf den Weg, um den Befehl auszuführen, den der HERR ihm durch Gad gegeben hatte.
So David went up at the word of Gad, which he spoke in the name of the LORD.
Arauna drosch gerade Weizen zusammen mit seinen vier Söhnen. Als sie aufschauten, sahen sie den Engel. Die Söhne rannten fort und versteckten sich.
Now Ornan turned back and saw the angel, and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. And Ornan was threshing wheat.
Da kam der König. Kaum hatte Arauna ihn erblickt, lief er ihm entgegen, warf sich ihm zu Füßen und berührte mit seinem Gesicht den Boden.
As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out from the threshing floor and prostrated himself before David with his face to the ground.
David sagte zu ihm: »Ich möchte deinen Dreschplatz kaufen, um hier einen Altar für den HERRN zu bauen, damit die Pest in Israel nicht länger wütet. Verlang den vollen Preis dafür.«
Then David said to Ornan, “Give me the site of this threshing floor, that I may build on it an altar to the LORD; for the full price you shall give it to me, that the plague may be restrained from the people.”
Arauna entgegnete: »Nimm ihn umsonst, mein Herr und König, und tu, was du dir vorgenommen hast! Ich gebe dir die Rinder für das Brandopfer und den Weizen für das Speiseopfer. Als Brennholz kannst du meinen Dreschschlitten nehmen. Ich schenke dir alles!«
Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself; and let my lord the king do what is good in his sight. See, I will give the oxen for burnt offerings and the threshing sledges for wood and the wheat for the grain offering; I will give it all.”
Doch der König wandte ein: »Nein, ich will den Dreschplatz kaufen, und zwar zum vollen Preis. Ich möchte dem HERRN nicht ein Opfer darbringen, das eigentlich dir gehört und mich nichts gekostet hat.«
But King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price; for I will not take what is yours for the LORD, or offer a burnt offering which costs me nothing.”
Und so bezahlte David für den Dreschplatz 600 Goldstücke, insgesamt etwa 7 Kilogramm Gold.
So David gave Ornan 600 shekels of gold by weight for the site.
Er baute dort einen Altar für den HERRN und brachte auf ihm Brand- und Friedensopfer dar. Dabei betete er, und der HERR ließ Feuer vom Himmel auf das Brandopfer fallen.
Then David built an altar to the LORD there and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. And he called to the LORD and He answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.
Dann befahl der HERR dem Engel, sein Schwert wieder in die Scheide zu stecken.
The LORD commanded the angel, and he put his sword back in its sheath.
David erkannte, dass der HERR ihm auf sein Opfer antwortete, das er auf dem Dreschplatz des Jebusiters Arauna dargebracht hatte.
At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he offered sacrifice there.
Zu dieser Zeit stand das heilige Zelt, das einst Mose in der Wüste als Wohnung des HERRN errichtet hatte, noch auf dem Hügel bei Gibeon. Auch der Brandopferaltar war dort.
For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were in the high place at Gibeon at that time.
