The LORD appeared again to Abraham near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. One day Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent during the hottest part of the day.

He looked up and noticed three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran to meet them and welcomed them, bowing low to the ground.
und sagte: Mein Herr, wenn ich Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden habe, geh doch nicht an deinem Knecht vorüber!
“My lord,” he said, “if it pleases you, stop here for a while.
Man wird etwas Wasser holen; dann könnt ihr euch die Füße waschen und euch unter dem Baum ausruhen.
Rest in the shade of this tree while water is brought to wash your feet.
Ich will einen Bissen Brot holen, dann könnt ihr euer Herz stärken, danach mögt ihr weiterziehen; denn deshalb seid ihr doch bei eurem Knecht vorbeigekommen. Sie erwiderten: Tu, wie du gesagt hast!
And since you’ve honored your servant with this visit, let me prepare some food to refresh you before you continue on your journey.”
“All right,” they said. “Do as you have said.”

Da lief Abraham eiligst ins Zelt zu Sara und rief: Schnell drei Sea feines Mehl! Knete es und backe Brotfladen!
Er lief weiter zum Vieh, nahm ein zartes, prächtiges Kalb und übergab es dem Knecht, der es schnell zubereitete.
Then Abraham ran out to the herd and chose a tender calf and gave it to his servant, who quickly prepared it.
Dann nahm Abraham Butter, Milch und das Kalb, das er hatte zubereiten lassen, und setzte es ihnen vor. Er selbst wartete ihnen unter dem Baum auf, während sie aßen.
When the food was ready, Abraham took some yogurt and milk and the roasted meat, and he served it to the men. As they ate, Abraham waited on them in the shade of the trees.
Sie fragten ihn: Wo ist deine Frau Sara? Dort im Zelt, sagte er.
“Where is Sarah, your wife?” the visitors asked.
“She’s inside the tent,” Abraham replied.

Da sprach er: In einem Jahr komme ich wieder zu dir. Siehe, dann wird deine Frau Sara einen Sohn haben. Sara hörte am Eingang des Zeltes hinter seinem Rücken zu.
Then one of them said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!”

Abraham und Sara waren schon alt; sie waren hochbetagt. Sara erging es nicht mehr, wie es Frauen zu ergehen pflegt.
Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children.
Sara lachte daher still in sich hinein und dachte: Ich bin doch schon alt und verbraucht und soll noch Liebeslust erfahren? Auch ist mein Herr doch schon ein alter Mann!
So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master — my husband — is also so old?”
Da sprach der HERR zu Abraham: Warum lacht Sara und sagt: Sollte ich wirklich noch gebären, obwohl ich so alt bin?
Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’
Ist denn beim HERRN etwas unmöglich? Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit werde ich wieder zu dir kommen; dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.
Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
Sara leugnete: Ich habe nicht gelacht. Denn sie hatte Angst. Er aber sagte: Doch, du hast gelacht.
Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh.”
But the LORD said, “No, you did laugh.”
But the LORD said, “No, you did laugh.”
Die Männer erhoben sich von dort und schauten auf Sodom hinab. Abraham ging mit ihnen, um sie zu geleiten.
Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
Then the men got up from their meal and looked out toward Sodom. As they left, Abraham went with them to send them on their way.
Da sagte der HERR: Soll ich Abraham verheimlichen, was ich tun will?
“Should I hide my plan from Abraham?” the LORD asked.
Abraham soll doch zu einem großen, mächtigen Volk werden, durch ihn sollen alle Völker der Erde Segen erlangen.
“For Abraham will certainly become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him.
Denn ich habe ihn dazu ausersehen, dass er seinen Söhnen und seinem Haus nach ihm gebietet, den Weg des HERRN einzuhalten und Gerechtigkeit und Recht zu üben, damit der HERR seine Zusagen an Abraham erfüllen kann.
I have singled him out so that he will direct his sons and their families to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just. Then I will do for Abraham all that I have promised.”
Der HERR sprach: Das Klagegeschrei über Sodom und Gomorra, ja, das ist angeschwollen und ihre Sünde, ja, die ist schwer.
So the LORD told Abraham, “I have heard a great outcry from Sodom and Gomorrah, because their sin is so flagrant.
Ich will hinabsteigen und sehen, ob ihr verderbliches Tun wirklich dem Klagegeschrei entspricht, das zu mir gedrungen ist, oder nicht. Ich will es wissen.
I am going down to see if their actions are as wicked as I have heard. If not, I want to know.”
Die Männer wandten sich ab von dort und gingen auf Sodom zu. Abraham aber stand noch immer vor dem HERRN.
The other men turned and headed toward Sodom, but the LORD remained with Abraham.
Abraham trat näher und sagte: Willst du auch den Gerechten mit den Ruchlosen wegraffen?
Abraham approached him and said, “Will you sweep away both the righteous and the wicked?
Vielleicht gibt es fünfzig Gerechte in der Stadt: Willst du auch sie wegraffen und nicht doch dem Ort vergeben wegen der fünfzig Gerechten in ihrer Mitte?
Suppose you find fifty righteous people living there in the city — will you still sweep it away and not spare it for their sakes?
Fern sei es von dir, so etwas zu tun: den Gerechten zusammen mit dem Frevler töten. Dann ginge es ja dem Gerechten wie dem Frevler. Das sei fern von dir. Sollte der Richter der ganzen Erde nicht Recht üben?
Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked. Why, you would be treating the righteous and the wicked exactly the same! Surely you wouldn’t do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?”
Da sprach der HERR: Wenn ich in Sodom fünfzig Gerechte in der Stadt finde, werde ich ihretwegen dem ganzen Ort vergeben.
And the LORD replied, “If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.”
Abraham antwortete und sprach: Siehe, ich habe es unternommen, mit meinem Herrn zu reden, obwohl ich Staub und Asche bin.
Then Abraham spoke again. “Since I have begun, let me speak further to my Lord, even though I am but dust and ashes.
Vielleicht fehlen an den fünfzig Gerechten fünf. Wirst du wegen der fünf die ganze Stadt vernichten? Nein, sagte er, ich werde sie nicht vernichten, wenn ich dort fünfundvierzig finde.
Suppose there are only forty-five righteous people rather than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?”
And the LORD said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five righteous people there.”
And the LORD said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five righteous people there.”
Er fuhr fort, zu ihm zu reden: Vielleicht finden sich dort nur vierzig. Da sprach er: Ich werde es der vierzig wegen nicht tun.
Then Abraham pressed his request further. “Suppose there are only forty?”
And the LORD replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the forty.”
And the LORD replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the forty.”
Da sagte er: Mein Herr zürne nicht, wenn ich weiterrede. Vielleicht finden sich dort nur dreißig. Er entgegnete: Ich werde es nicht tun, wenn ich dort dreißig finde.
“Please don’t be angry, my Lord,” Abraham pleaded. “Let me speak — suppose only thirty righteous people are found?”
And the LORD replied, “I will not destroy it if I find thirty.”
And the LORD replied, “I will not destroy it if I find thirty.”
Darauf sagte er: Siehe, ich habe es unternommen, mit meinem Herrn zu reden. Vielleicht finden sich dort nur zwanzig. Er antwortete: Ich werde sie nicht vernichten um der zwanzig willen.
Then Abraham said, “Since I have dared to speak to the Lord, let me continue — suppose there are only twenty?”
And the LORD replied, “Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”
And the LORD replied, “Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”
Und nochmals sagte er: Mein Herr zürne nicht, wenn ich nur noch einmal das Wort ergreife. Vielleicht finden sich dort nur zehn. Er sprach: Ich werde sie nicht vernichten um der zehn willen.
Finally, Abraham said, “Lord, please don’t be angry with me if I speak one more time. Suppose only ten are found there?”
And the LORD replied, “Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”
And the LORD replied, “Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”
