Die Israeliten lagerten in der moabitischen Steppe östlich des Jordan, gegenüber von Jericho. Dort ließ der HERR ihnen durch Mose sagen:
Forty-Eight Cities for the Levites
And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,

»Gebt den Leviten in euren Stammesgebieten Städte, in denen sie wohnen können! Überlasst ihnen mit den Städten auch Weideland für ihre Viehherden!
Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.
Die Weidefläche soll sich auf jeder Seite der Stadt 500 Meter weit ins Land erstrecken,
And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.
so dass jede ihrer vier Seiten mindestens einen Kilometer lang ist.
And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and the city shall be in the midst: this shall be to them the suburbs of the cities.
Gebt den Leviten insgesamt 48 Städte! Sechs davon sollen als Zufluchtsorte für Menschen dienen, die ohne Absicht jemanden getötet haben.
Six Cities of Refuge
And among the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint for the manslayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities.

Achtet darauf, dass es bei der Auswahl der Städte gerecht zugeht. Die Stämme mit großen Gebieten sollen mehr Städte abtreten als die Stämme mit weniger Land.«
And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.
»Sag den Israeliten: Wenn ihr den Jordan überquert und ins Land Kanaan kommt,
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come over Jordan into the land of Canaan;
sollt ihr Zufluchtsstädte bestimmen, in die jeder von euch fliehen kann, der ohne Absicht einen Menschen getötet hat.
Then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.
Dort ist er vor der Blutrache sicher, bis ihr den Fall öffentlich vor Gericht untersucht habt.
And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.
Wählt dazu sechs Städte aus,
And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge.
drei hier im Osten und drei drüben im Land Kanaan.
Ye shall give three cities on this side Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan, which shall be cities of refuge.
Sie bieten jedem von euch Schutz, auch den Ausländern, die bei euch zu Gast sind oder ständig bei euch leben. Jeder, der unabsichtlich einen Menschen getötet hat, soll dorthin fliehen.
These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither.
Wer einen anderen aber mit einem Gegenstand aus Metall, Stein oder Holz erschlägt, ist ein Mörder und muss sterben.
And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
Der nächste Verwandte des Ermordeten soll ihn töten, sobald er ihn findet.
The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him.
Denn wer aus Hass und Feindschaft einen Menschen erschlägt oder mit einem Wurfgeschoss oder mit der Faust tödlich verletzt, muss auf jeden Fall mit dem Tod bestraft werden.
But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;
Anders ist es, wenn jemand nicht aus Feindschaft, sondern unabsichtlich einen Menschen tötet, indem er ihn aus Versehen zu Boden stößt, mit einem Wurfgeschoss trifft
But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait,
oder einen Stein auf ihn fallen lässt.
Or with any stone, wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm:
In diesem Fall soll die Volksgemeinschaft vor Gericht darüber urteilen, ob der Bluträcher ihn töten darf. Haltet euch dabei an dieses Gesetz!
Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:
Wird der Angeklagte freigesprochen, dann sollt ihr ihn vor der Rache schützen und in die Zufluchtsstadt zurückbringen, in die er geflohen war. Dort muss er bleiben, bis der Hohepriester stirbt, der gerade im Amt ist.
And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil.
Wenn der Totschläger aber die Stadt verlassen sollte, in die er geflohen ist, verliert er seinen Schutz.
But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;
Trifft der Bluträcher ihn außerhalb der Stadt an und tötet ihn, dann macht er sich nicht schuldig.
And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:
Denn der Totschläger soll bis zum Tod des Hohenpriesters an seinem Zufluchtsort bleiben. Erst danach kann er nach Hause zu seinem Grund und Boden zurückkehren.
Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.
Dieses Gesetz gilt für euch und eure Nachkommen überall, wo ihr lebt.
So these things shall be for a statute of judgment unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
Ein Mörder muss zum Tod verurteilt werden, aber nur dann, wenn mindestens zwei Zeugen gegen ihn aussagen. Eine einzelne Zeugenaussage reicht dazu nicht aus.
Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.
Ein Mörder kann sich nicht freikaufen. Ihr dürft kein Geld von ihm annehmen, sondern müsst ihn auf jeden Fall töten.
Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.
Nehmt auch kein Geld von einem Totschläger an! Er darf sich nicht das Recht erkaufen, seine Zufluchtsstadt zu verlassen und nach Hause zurückzukehren, bevor der Hohepriester gestorben ist.
And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
Ihr sollt das Land, in dem ihr lebt, nicht entweihen. Entweiht wird es, wenn jemand darin einen anderen Menschen ermordet. Es kann nur dadurch wieder rein werden, dass der Mörder selbst sein Leben lässt.
So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.
