That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Als Herodes König von Judäa war, lebte dort ein Priester namens Zacharias. Er gehörte zur Dienstgruppe Abija. Wie Zacharias stammte auch seine Frau Elisabeth aus der Familie von Aaron.
And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
Beide lebten nach Gottes Willen und hielten sich in allem genau an seine Gebote und Ordnungen.
And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
Doch der Engel sagte zu ihm: »Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias! Gott hat dein Gebet erhört. Deine Frau Elisabeth wird bald einen Sohn bekommen, den sollst du Johannes nennen!
And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
Du wirst über dieses Kind froh und glücklich sein, und auch viele andere werden sich über seine Geburt freuen.
For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
Gott wird ihm eine große Aufgabe übertragen. Er wird weder Wein noch andere berauschende Getränke zu sich nehmen. Schon vor seiner Geburt wird er mit dem Heiligen Geist erfüllt sein,
And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
und er wird viele in Israel zum Herrn, ihrem Gott, zurückbringen.
And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
Erfüllt mit dem Geist und der Kraft des Propheten Elia wird er das Kommen Gottes vorbereiten: Er wird dafür sorgen, dass die Eltern sich wieder mit den Kindern versöhnen, und die Ungehorsamen werden wieder danach fragen, wie sie Gottes Willen erfüllen können. So wird er das ganze Volk darauf vorbereiten, den Herrn zu empfangen.«
And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
»Woran kann ich erkennen, dass deine Worte wahr sind?«, fragte Zacharias erstaunt den Engel. »Ich bin ein alter Mann, und auch meine Frau ist schon alt!«
And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
Der Engel antwortete: »Ich bin Gabriel und stehe unmittelbar vor Gott als sein Diener. Er gab mir den Auftrag, dir diese gute Nachricht zu überbringen.
And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
Was ich gesagt habe, wird sich erfüllen, wenn die Zeit dafür gekommen ist. Aber weil du meinen Worten keinen Glauben geschenkt hast, wirst du so lange stumm sein und nicht mehr sprechen können, bis es eintrifft.«
And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
Inzwischen wartete die Menschenmenge draußen auf Zacharias. Alle wunderten sich, dass er so lange im Tempel blieb.
And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
Als er endlich herauskam, konnte er nicht zu ihnen sprechen. Daran erkannten sie, dass er im Tempel eine göttliche Erscheinung gehabt haben musste. Zacharias verständigte sich durch Handzeichen mit ihnen und blieb stumm.
And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
Als die Zeit seines Tempeldienstes vorüber war, kehrte er nach Hause zurück.
And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
»Der Herr hat an mich gedacht und mir geholfen«, sagte sie. »Nun kann mich niemand mehr verachten, weil ich keine Kinder habe.«
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

Elisabeth war im sechsten Monat schwanger, als Gott den Engel Gabriel nach Nazareth schickte, einer Stadt in Galiläa.
To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
Dort sollte er eine junge Frau namens Maria aufsuchen. Sie war noch unberührt und mit Josef, einem Nachkommen von König David, verlobt.
And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
Der Engel kam zu ihr und sagte: »Sei gegrüßt, Maria! Der Herr ist mit dir! Er hat dich unter allen Frauen auserwählt.«
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
Maria erschrak über die Worte des Engels und fragte sich, was dieser Gruß bedeuten könnte.
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
»Hab keine Angst, Maria«, redete der Engel weiter. »Gott hat dich zu etwas Besonderem auserwählt.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
Du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn zur Welt bringen. Jesus soll er heißen.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
Er wird mächtig sein, und man wird ihn Sohn des Höchsten nennen. Gott, der Herr, wird ihm die Königsherrschaft seines Stammvaters David übergeben,
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
und er wird die Nachkommen von Jakob für immer regieren. Seine Herrschaft wird niemals enden.«
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
»Wie soll das geschehen?«, fragte Maria den Engel. »Ich habe ja noch nie mit einem Mann geschlafen.«
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Der Engel antwortete ihr: »Der Heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft des Höchsten wird sich an dir zeigen. Darum wird dieses Kind auch heilig sein und Sohn Gottes genannt werden.
And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
Selbst Elisabeth, deine Verwandte, von der man sagte, dass sie keine Kinder bekommen kann, ist jetzt im sechsten Monat schwanger. Sie wird in ihrem hohen Alter einen Sohn zur Welt bringen.
For with God nothing shall be impossible.
Gott hat es ihr zugesagt, und was Gott sagt, das geschieht!«
And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
»Ich will mich dem Herrn ganz zur Verfügung stellen«, antwortete Maria. »Alles soll so geschehen, wie du es mir gesagt hast.« Darauf verließ sie der Engel.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

Bald danach machte sich Maria auf den Weg ins Bergland von Judäa und eilte so schnell wie möglich in die Stadt, in der Elisabeth und ihr Mann Zacharias wohnten.
And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
Sie betrat das Haus und begrüßte Elisabeth.
And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
Als Elisabeth Marias Stimme hörte, bewegte sich das Kind lebhaft in ihr. Da wurde sie mit dem Heiligen Geist erfüllt
And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
und rief laut: »Dich hat Gott gesegnet, mehr als alle anderen Frauen, und gesegnet ist das Kind, das in dir heranwächst!
And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Womit habe ich verdient, dass die Mutter meines Herrn zu mir kommt?
For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
Denn kaum hörte ich deine Stimme, da hüpfte das Kind in mir vor Freude.
And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
Wie glücklich kannst du dich schätzen, weil du geglaubt hast! Was der Herr dir angekündigt hat, wird geschehen.«
Mary's Song of Praise
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
Da begann Maria, Gott zu loben: »Von ganzem Herzen preise ich den Herrn.
For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Mir, seiner Dienerin, hat er Beachtung geschenkt, und das, obwohl ich gering und unbedeutend bin. Von jetzt an und zu allen Zeiten wird man mich glücklich preisen,
For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
denn Gott hat große Dinge an mir getan, er, der mächtig und heilig ist!
And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
Seine Barmherzigkeit bleibt für immer und ewig, sie gilt allen Menschen, die in Ehrfurcht vor ihm leben.
He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
Er streckt seinen starken Arm aus und fegt die Hochmütigen mit ihren stolzen Plänen hinweg.
He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
Er stürzt Herrscher von ihrem Thron, Unterdrückte aber richtet er auf.
He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
Die Hungrigen beschenkt er mit Gütern, und die Reichen schickt er mit leeren Händen weg.
He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
Seine Barmherzigkeit hat er uns, seinen Dienern, zugesagt, ja, er wird seinem Volk Israel helfen.
As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
Er hat es unseren Vorfahren versprochen, Abraham und seinen Nachkommen hat er es für immer zugesagt.«
And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
Als Nachbarn und Verwandte hörten, dass Gott so barmherzig mit ihr gewesen war, freuten sie sich mit ihr.
And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
Am achten Tag nach der Geburt kamen sie zur Beschneidung des Kindes zusammen. Sie wollten es Zacharias nennen — so wie sein Vater.
And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
Doch Elisabeth widersprach: »Nein, er soll Johannes heißen!«
And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
»Aber keiner in deiner Verwandtschaft trägt diesen Namen!«, wandten die anderen ein.
And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
Sie fragten den Vater durch Handzeichen: »Wie soll dein Sohn heißen?«
And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
Zacharias ließ sich eine Tafel geben und schrieb darauf: »Sein Name ist Johannes.« Darüber wunderten sich alle.
And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
Im selben Augenblick konnte Zacharias wieder sprechen, und er fing an, Gott zu loben.
And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
Ehrfürchtiges Staunen ergriff alle, die in dieser Gegend wohnten, und im ganzen Bergland von Judäa sprachen die Leute über das, was geschehen war.
And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
Nachdenklich fragten sie sich: »Was wird aus diesem Kind noch werden?« Denn es war offensichtlich, dass Gott etwas Besonderes mit ihm vorhatte.
Zechariah's Song
And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

»Gelobt sei der Herr, der Gott Israels! Er ist zu unserem Volk gekommen und hat es befreit.
And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
Er hat uns einen starken Retter geschickt, einen Nachkommen seines Dieners David.
As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
So hatte er es durch seine heiligen Propheten schon vor langer Zeit verkündet:
That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
Er wird uns vor unseren Feinden retten und aus der Hand aller Menschen, die uns hassen.
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
Damit erweist er sich unseren Vorfahren gegenüber barmherzig und zeigt, dass er seinen heiligen Bund nicht vergessen hat,
The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
den Eid, den er unserem Vater Abraham geschworen hat.
That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
Darin sagt er ihm zu, dass er uns, seine Nachkommen, aus der Hand unserer Feinde befreit.
In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
Dann können wir ohne Furcht in seiner Gegenwart leben und ihm unser Leben lang dienen als Menschen, die ihm gehören und seinen Willen tun.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
Und dich, mein Sohn, wird man einen Propheten des Höchsten nennen. Du wirst vor dem Herrn hergehen und ihm den Weg bahnen.
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
Seinem Volk wirst du zeigen, dass es durch die Vergebung seiner Sünden gerettet wird.
Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
Gott vergibt uns, weil seine Barmherzigkeit so groß ist. Aus der Höhe kommt das helle Morgenlicht zu uns, der verheißene Retter.
To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Dieses Licht wird allen Menschen leuchten, die in Finsternis und Todesfurcht leben; es wird uns auf den Weg des Friedens führen.«
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
Johannes wuchs heran und wurde zu einem verständigen und klugen Mann. Er zog sich in die Einsamkeit der Wüste zurück bis zu dem Tag, an dem er öffentlich vor dem Volk Israel auftrat.
