Gleich in der Frühe fassten die Hohepriester, die Ältesten und die Schriftgelehrten, also der ganze Hohe Rat, über Jesus einen Beschluss. Sie ließen ihn fesseln und abführen und lieferten ihn Pilatus aus.
Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
Pilatus fragte ihn: Bist du der König der Juden? Er antwortete ihm: Du sagst es.
Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes,
Die Hohepriester brachten viele Anklagen gegen ihn vor.
and Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?”
Da wandte sich Pilatus wieder an ihn und fragte: Willst du denn nichts dazu sagen? Sieh doch, wie viele Anklagen sie gegen dich vorbringen.
But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.
Jesus aber gab keine Antwort mehr, sodass Pilatus sich wunderte.
Now it was the governor’s custom each year during the Passover celebration to release one prisoner — anyone the people requested.
Jeweils zum Fest ließ Pilatus einen Gefangenen frei, den sie sich ausbitten durften.
One of the prisoners at that time was Barabbas, a revolutionary who had committed murder in an uprising.
Damals saß gerade ein Mann namens Barabbas im Gefängnis, zusammen mit anderen Aufrührern, die bei einem Aufstand einen Mord begangen hatten.
The crowd went to Pilate and asked him to release a prisoner as usual.
Die Volksmenge zog zu Pilatus hinauf und verlangte, ihnen die gleiche Gunst zu gewähren wie sonst.
“Would you like me to release to you this ‘King of the Jews’?” Pilate asked.
Pilatus fragte sie: Wollt ihr, dass ich euch den König der Juden freilasse?
(For he realized by now that the leading priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.)
Er merkte nämlich, dass die Hohepriester Jesus nur aus Neid an ihn ausgeliefert hatten.
But at this point the leading priests stirred up the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus.
Die Hohepriester aber wiegelten die Menge auf, lieber die Freilassung des Barabbas zu fordern.
Pilate asked them, “Then what should I do with this man you call the king of the Jews?”
Pilatus wandte sich von Neuem an sie und fragte: Was soll ich dann mit dem tun, den ihr den König der Juden nennt?
“Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?”
But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”

Pilatus entgegnete: Was hat er denn für ein Verbrechen begangen? Sie aber schrien noch lauter: Kreuzige ihn!
So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
Darauf ließ Pilatus, um die Menge zufriedenzustellen, Barabbas frei. Jesus lieferte er, nachdem er ihn hatte geißeln lassen, zur Kreuzigung aus.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment.
Die Soldaten führten ihn ab, in den Hof hinein, der Prätorium heißt, und riefen die ganze Kohorte zusammen.
They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head.
Dann legten sie ihm einen Purpurmantel um und flochten einen Dornenkranz; den setzten sie ihm auf
Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!”
und grüßten ihn: Sei gegrüßt, König der Juden!
And they struck him on the head with a reed stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.
Sie schlugen ihm mit einem Stock auf den Kopf und spuckten ihn an, beugten die Knie und huldigten ihm.
When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.

And they brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which means “Place of the Skull”).
Und sie brachten Jesus an einen Ort namens Golgota, das heißt übersetzt: Schädelhöhe.
They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it.
Dort reichten sie ihm Wein, der mit Myrrhe gewürzt war; er aber nahm ihn nicht.
Dann kreuzigten sie ihn. Sie verteilten seine Kleider, indem sie das Los über sie warfen, wer was bekommen sollte.
It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him.
Es war die dritte Stunde, als sie ihn kreuzigten.
A sign announced the charge against him. It read, “The King of the Jews.”
Und eine Aufschrift gab seine Schuld an: Der König der Juden.

The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. “Ha! Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days.
Die Leute, die vorbeikamen, verhöhnten ihn, schüttelten den Kopf und riefen: Ach, du willst den Tempel niederreißen und in drei Tagen wieder aufbauen?
Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!”
Rette dich selbst und steig herab vom Kreuz!
The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself!
Ebenso verhöhnten ihn auch die Hohepriester und die Schriftgelehrten und sagten untereinander: Andere hat er gerettet, sich selbst kann er nicht retten.
Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!” Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.
Der Christus, der König von Israel! Er soll jetzt vom Kreuz herabsteigen, damit wir sehen und glauben. Auch die beiden Männer, die mit ihm zusammen gekreuzigt wurden, beschimpften ihn.
The Death of Jesus
At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.
Als die sechste Stunde kam, brach eine Finsternis über das ganze Land herein — bis zur neunten Stunde.
Und in der neunten Stunde schrie Jesus mit lauter Stimme: Eloï, Eloï, lema sabachtani?, das heißt übersetzt: Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen?
Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.
Einige von denen, die dabeistanden und es hörten, sagten: Hört, er ruft nach Elija!
One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down!”
Einer lief hin, tauchte einen Schwamm in Essig, steckte ihn auf ein Rohr und gab Jesus zu trinken. Dabei sagte er: Lasst, wir wollen sehen, ob Elija kommt und ihn herabnimmt.
Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last.
Jesus aber schrie mit lauter Stimme. Dann hauchte er den Geist aus.
And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
Da riss der Vorhang im Tempel in zwei Teile von oben bis unten.
Als der Hauptmann, der Jesus gegenüberstand, ihn auf diese Weise sterben sah, sagte er: Wahrhaftig, dieser Mensch war Gottes Sohn.
Auch einige Frauen sahen von Weitem zu, darunter Maria aus Magdala, Maria, die Mutter von Jakobus dem Kleinen und Joses, sowie Salome;
They had been followers of Jesus and had cared for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also there.
sie waren Jesus schon in Galiläa nachgefolgt und hatten ihm gedient. Noch viele andere Frauen waren dabei, die mit ihm nach Jerusalem hinaufgezogen waren.
Da es Rüsttag war, der Tag vor dem Sabbat, und es schon Abend wurde,
Joseph of Arimathea took a risk and went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. (Joseph was an honored member of the high council, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.)
ging Josef von Arimathäa, ein vornehmes Mitglied des Hohen Rats, der auch auf das Reich Gottes wartete, zu Pilatus und wagte es, um den Leichnam Jesu zu bitten.
Pilate couldn’t believe that Jesus was already dead, so he called for the Roman officer and asked if he had died yet.
Pilatus war überrascht, als er hörte, dass Jesus schon tot sei. Er ließ den Hauptmann kommen und fragte ihn, ob Jesus bereits gestorben sei.
The officer confirmed that Jesus was dead, so Pilate told Joseph he could have the body.
Als er es vom Hauptmann erfahren hatte, überließ er Josef den Leichnam.
Joseph bought a long sheet of linen cloth. Then he took Jesus’ body down from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone in front of the entrance.
Josef kaufte ein Leinentuch, nahm Jesus vom Kreuz, wickelte ihn in das Tuch und legte ihn in ein Grab, das in einen Felsen gehauen war. Dann wälzte er einen Stein vor den Eingang des Grabes.
