Wer früher nur das Feinste aß, bricht nun vor Hunger auf der Straße zusammen. Wer früher auf purpurfarbenen Kissen schlief, liegt jetzt mitten im stinkenden Dreck.

Mein Volk hat schwer gesündigt — schlimmer noch als die Leute von Sodom, die plötzlich und ohne menschliches Zutun ein schreckliches Ende fanden.
Einst waren unsere Fürsten gesund und schön: Ihre Zähne blitzten so weiß wie Schnee, und ihre Wangen schimmerten rot wie Korallen, ihre ganze Erscheinung glich einem funkelnden Juwel.

Wer vom Schwert der Feinde durchbohrt wurde, hatte es sogar noch besser als jene, die überlebten. Sie verhungerten und starben einen qualvollen Tod, weil keine Ernte mehr eingebracht werden konnte.

Am Ende war die Not so groß geworden, dass mein Volk weder aus noch ein wusste. Liebevolle Mütter haben dann aus lauter Verzweiflung ihre eigenen Kinder gekocht und gegessen!

Der HERR hat seinem Zorn freien Lauf gelassen und die sengende Glut über uns ausgegossen. Er hat in der Stadt Zion ein Feuer gelegt, das sie bis auf die Grundmauern niederbrannte.
Was niemand für möglich gehalten hätte, ist nun vor den Augen der Völker geschehen: Die Feinde sind in Jerusalem eingezogen, im Triumph schritten sie durch seine Tore.

Es musste so kommen wegen der Schuld der Propheten und wegen der Sünden, die die Priester begingen: Unschuldige Menschen haben sie umgebracht — und das inmitten der Stadt!

Jetzt taumeln sie selbst durch die Straßen wie Blinde, die ihren Weg nicht finden. Ihre Kleider sind so mit Blut besudelt, dass niemand sie zu berühren wagt.

»Aus dem Weg!«, ruft man ihnen zu. »Ihr seid unrein! Aus dem Weg! Rührt uns nicht an!« So müssen sie fliehen und irren umher. Sogar in anderen Ländern sagt man: »Bei uns können sie nicht bleiben!«

Der HERR hat sich von ihnen abgewandt und sie eigenhändig aus dem Land vertrieben. Niemand mehr erweist den Priestern Respekt oder erbarmt sich über die alten Männer.

Wir warteten unentwegt auf Hilfe, doch alles Hoffen war vergeblich! Das Volk, nach dem wir Ausschau hielten, konnte uns auch nicht retten.

Die Feinde verfolgten uns auf Schritt und Tritt, niemand wagte sich mehr auf die Straße. Unsere Tage waren gezählt, wir waren verloren, jetzt war unser Ende gekommen!

Lacht nur schadenfroh, ihr Edomiter im Land Uz! Der Kelch mit Gottes Zorn kommt auch zu euch! Ob ihr wollt oder nicht, ihr müsst daraus trinken, dann werdet ihr taumeln und nackt am Boden liegen.

Freue dich, Zion, deine Schuld ist gesühnt! Gott wird dich nie mehr in die Gefangenschaft führen. Aber eure Schuld, ihr Edomiter, bringt er ans Licht! Ja, er wird euch zur Rechenschaft ziehen.
