Auch Jakob erfuhr, dass es in Ägypten Getreide zu kaufen gab. »Warum zögert ihr noch?«, fragte er seine Söhne.
Joseph’s Brothers Sent to Egypt
Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?”

»In Ägypten gibt es Getreide zu kaufen! Los, beeilt euch und besorgt etwas, bevor wir verhungern!«
He said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from that place, so that we may live and not die.”
Josefs zehn Halbbrüder machten sich auf den Weg;
Then ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt.
nur sein jüngster Bruder Benjamin blieb zu Hause, weil Jakob befürchtete, ihm könnte etwas zustoßen.
But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “I am afraid that harm may befall him.”
Zusammen mit vielen anderen zogen sie nach Ägypten, denn in ganz Kanaan wütete die Hungersnot.
So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, for the famine was in the land of Canaan also.
Als Stellvertreter des Pharaos war Josef dafür verantwortlich, die Abgabe des Getreides an die herbeiströmenden Menschen zu überwachen. Als seine Brüder vor ihn traten, verbeugten sie sich tief.
Now Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.
Josef erkannte sie sofort, ließ sich aber nichts anmerken. »Woher kommt ihr?«, fuhr er sie an. »Aus Kanaan, um Getreide zu kaufen«, gaben sie ahnungslos zur Antwort.
When Joseph saw his brothers he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and spoke to them harshly. And he said to them, “Where have you come from?” And they said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”
Josef erinnerte sich an seine Träume von damals. »Ihr seid Spione!«, beschuldigte er sie. »Ihr seid nur gekommen, um zu erkunden, wo unser Land schwach ist!«
Joseph remembered the dreams which he had about them, and said to them, “You are spies; you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land.”
»Nein, nein, Herr, wir sind deine ergebenen Diener!«, riefen sie. »Wir möchten nur Getreide kaufen!
Then they said to him, “No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.
Wir sind Brüder und ehrliche Leute. Wir sind keine Spione!«
“We are all sons of one man; we are honest men, your servants are not spies.”
»Das glaube ich nicht«, entgegnete Josef, »ihr wollt unser Land ausforschen!«
Yet he said to them, “No, but you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land!”
»Herr«, antworteten sie, »unser Vater lebt in Kanaan. Wir waren zwölf Brüder. Der jüngste ist bei ihm geblieben, und einer von uns lebt nicht mehr.«
But they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no longer alive.”
Aber Josef wiederholte: »Ich bleibe bei dem, was ich gesagt habe — Spione seid ihr!
Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you, you are spies;
Ich werde eure Aussage überprüfen. Beim Leben des Pharaos schwöre ich: Ihr kommt hier nicht eher heraus, bis ich euren jüngsten Bruder gesehen habe!
by this you will be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here!
Einer von euch soll ihn holen. Die anderen bleiben in Haft, bis ich weiß, ob man sich auf eure Worte verlassen kann. Wenn nicht, dann seid ihr Spione — beim Leben des Pharaos!«
“Send one of you that he may get your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.”
Am dritten Tag sagte er zu ihnen: »Ich bin ein Mann, der Ehrfurcht vor Gott hat. Darum lasse ich euch unter einer Bedingung am Leben:
Now Joseph said to them on the third day, “Do this and live, for I fear God:
Um eure Ehrlichkeit zu beweisen, bleibt einer von euch hier in Haft. Ihr anderen geht mit einer Ladung an Getreide zurück, damit eure Familien nicht mehr hungern müssen.
if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in your prison; but as for the rest of you, go, carry grain for the famine of your households,
Aber bringt mir euren jüngsten Bruder herbei! Dann weiß ich, dass ihr die Wahrheit gesagt habt, und lasse euch am Leben.« Die Brüder willigten ein.
and bring your youngest brother to me, so your words may be verified, and you will not die.” And they did so.
Sie sagten zueinander: »Jetzt müssen wir das ausbaden, was wir Josef angetan haben! Wir sahen seine Angst, als er uns um Gnade anflehte, aber wir haben nicht gehört.«
Then they said to one another, “Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; therefore this distress has come upon us.”
»Habe ich euch damals nicht gesagt, ihr solltet den Jungen in Ruhe lassen?«, warf Ruben den anderen vor. »Aber ihr habt nicht gehört. Jetzt müssen wir für seinen Tod büßen!«
Reuben answered them, saying, “Did I not tell you, ‘Do not sin against the boy’; and you would not listen? Now comes the reckoning for his blood.”
Sie ahnten nicht, dass Josef sie verstand, denn vorher hatte er durch einen Dolmetscher mit ihnen geredet.
They did not know, however, that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.
Josef verließ den Raum, damit sie nicht merkten, dass er weinen musste. Als er sich wieder gefasst hatte, kam er zurück und ließ Simeon vor den Augen der Brüder festnehmen.
He turned away from them and wept. But when he returned to them and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.
Dann befahl er seinen Dienern, die Säcke der anderen mit Getreide zu füllen und ihnen Verpflegung mitzugeben. Heimlich gab er die Anweisung, jedem auch sein gezahltes Geld oben in den Sack zu stecken.
Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain and to restore every man’s money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. And thus it was done for them.
Die Brüder beluden ihre Esel mit den Getreidesäcken und machten sich auf den Weg.
So they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed from there.
Über Nacht blieben sie in einer Herberge. Als einer von ihnen seinen Sack öffnete, um seinen Esel zu füttern, bemerkte er das Geld.
As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money; and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.
»Seht, was ich in meinem Sack gefunden habe!«, rief er. »Jemand hat mein Geld dorthin zurückgelegt!« Da bekamen sie es mit der Angst zu tun. »Was hat Gott uns angetan?«, riefen sie.
Then he said to his brothers, “My money has been returned, and behold, it is even in my sack.” And their hearts sank, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?”
Zu Hause in Kanaan erzählten sie alles ihrem Vater Jakob:
Simeon Is Held Hostage
When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying,
»Der ägyptische Herrscher war sehr unfreundlich und nannte uns Spione, die das Land auskundschaften wollen.
“The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly with us, and took us for spies of the country.
Wir versicherten ihm, dass wir ehrliche Menschen und keine Spione sind.
“But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies.
›Wir waren zwölf Brüder‹, erzählten wir ihm, ›aber einer ist tot und der jüngste zu Hause bei unserem Vater.‹
‘We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no longer alive, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan.’
Da antwortete er: ›Ich werde überprüfen, ob ihr die Wahrheit sagt. Lasst einen von euch bei mir zurück und nehmt das Getreide mit zu euren Familien nach Hause.
“The man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me and take grain for the famine of your households, and go.
Aber ihr müsst euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir bringen! Daran will ich erkennen, dass ihr keine Spione, sondern ehrliche Menschen seid. Ich werde euch euren Bruder zurückgeben, und ihr könnt euch im Land frei bewegen!‹«
‘But bring your youngest brother to me that I may know that you are not spies, but honest men. I will give your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.’”
Als die Brüder ihre Säcke ausleeren wollten, entdeckten sie die anderen Geldbeutel. Sie erstarrten vor Schreck.
Now it came about as they were emptying their sacks, that behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were dismayed.
»Ihr raubt mir meine Kinder!«, rief Jakob verzweifelt. »Josef lebt nicht mehr, Simeon ist zurückgeblieben, und Benjamin wollt ihr mir auch noch nehmen! Nichts bleibt mir erspart!«
Their father Jacob said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me.”
Da griff Ruben ein: »Wenn ich dir Benjamin nicht zurückbringe, kannst du meine beiden Söhne töten«, sagte er. »Ich übernehme die Verantwortung!«
Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my care, and I will return him to you.”
»Nein«, rief Jakob, »es kommt überhaupt nicht in Frage, dass Benjamin mit euch geht! Sein Bruder Josef ist schon tot, und er ist der letzte von Rahels Söhnen. Ich bin ein alter Mann, und wenn ihm unterwegs auch noch etwas zustößt, würde mich das ins Grab bringen! Daran wärt allein ihr schuld!«
But Jacob said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm should befall him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”
