In seinem 2. Regierungsjahr hatte König Nebukadnezar einen Traum, der ihm solche Sorgen machte, dass er nicht mehr schlafen konnte.
The King’s Forgotten Dream
Now in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; and his spirit was troubled and his sleep left him.

Da ließ er seine Berater rufen, alle Wahrsager, Geisterbeschwörer, Zauberer und Sterndeuter, damit sie ihm seinen Traum erklärten. Als sie sich vor dem König versammelt hatten,
Then the king gave orders to call in the magicians, the conjurers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king.
begann er: »Ich habe etwas geträumt, das mir sehr zu schaffen macht. Nun möchte ich wissen, was es damit auf sich hat.«
The king said to them, “I had a dream and my spirit is anxious to understand the dream.”
Da antworteten die Sterndeuter auf Aramäisch: »Lang lebe der König! Erzähl uns, deinen ergebenen Dienern, den Traum, dann wollen wir ihn deuten!«
Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic: “O king, live forever! Tell the dream to your servants, and we will declare the interpretation.”
Aber der König entgegnete: »Nein, erzählt ihr mir, was ich geträumt habe, und erklärt es mir! Wenn ihr das nicht könnt, lasse ich euch in Stücke hauen und eure Häuser in Schutt und Asche legen. Niemand bringt mich davon ab.
The king replied to the Chaldeans, “The command from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you will be torn limb from limb and your houses will be made a rubbish heap.
Doch wenn ihr mir den Traum schildert und ihn deuten könnt, beschenke ich euch reich und lasse euch große Ehre zuteilwerden. Beschreibt ihn mir also und erklärt ihn!«
“But if you declare the dream and its interpretation, you will receive from me gifts and a reward and great honor; therefore declare to me the dream and its interpretation.”
Die Männer baten noch einmal: »Der König möge ihn uns beschreiben; dann werden wir bestimmt sagen können, welche Botschaft er enthält.«
They answered a second time and said, “Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will declare the interpretation.”
Da warf der König ihnen vor: »Ihr wollt euch doch nur herausreden und Zeit gewinnen, weil ihr wisst, dass ich meine Drohung wahr mache.
The king replied, “I know for certain that you are bargaining for time, inasmuch as you have seen that the command from me is firm,
Wenn ihr mir nicht sagt, was ich geträumt habe, lasse ich euer Todesurteil vollstrecken. Ich durchschaue eure Pläne: Ihr wollt mir eine Traumdeutung vorsetzen, die nichts als Lug und Trug ist. So meint ihr, mich hinhalten zu können, bis mein Zorn sich gelegt hat. Doch ich bleibe dabei: Erzählt mir den Traum, denn so erkenne ich, dass ihr mir auch die Wahrheit sagt, wenn ihr ihn erklärt.«
that if you do not make the dream known to me, there is only one decree for you. For you have agreed together to speak lying and corrupt words before me until the situation is changed; therefore tell me the dream, that I may know that you can declare to me its interpretation.”
Die Sterndeuter antworteten: »Kein Mensch auf der ganzen Welt kann diesen Wunsch erfüllen. Noch nie hat ein König, und sei er noch so mächtig, so etwas von einem Wahrsager, Geisterbeschwörer oder Sterndeuter verlangt.
The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who could declare the matter for the king, inasmuch as no great king or ruler has ever asked anything like this of any magician, conjurer or Chaldean.
Was du uns da zumutest, ist für Menschen nicht möglich. Nur die Götter können dir, o König, deinen Traum offenbaren! Doch sie wohnen nicht bei uns sterblichen Menschen.«
“Moreover, the thing which the king demands is difficult, and there is no one else who could declare it to the king except gods, whose dwelling place is not with mortal flesh.”
Da verlor Nebukadnezar die Beherrschung. Voller Zorn ordnete er an, sämtliche königlichen Berater hinzurichten.
Because of this the king became indignant and very furious and gave orders to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
Überall gab man den Befehl bekannt: »Alle Gelehrten sollen getötet werden!« Auch nach Daniel und seinen Freunden wurde gesucht.
So the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they looked for Daniel and his friends to kill them.
Als Daniel davon erfuhr, wandte er sich an Arjoch, den Oberbefehlshaber der königlichen Leibwache, der schon die Hinrichtungen vorbereitete. Er überlegte jedes Wort genau und fragte höflich:
Then Daniel replied with discretion and discernment to Arioch, the captain of the king’s bodyguard, who had gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon;
»Warum hat Nebukadnezar einen solch harten Befehl erteilt?« Arjoch erzählte ihm, wie es dazu gekommen war.
he said to Arioch, the king’s commander, “For what reason is the decree from the king so urgent?” Then Arioch informed Daniel about the matter.
Sofort ging Daniel zum König und bat ihn: »Gib mir etwas Zeit, dann werde ich dir deinen Traum deuten.«
So Daniel went in and requested of the king that he would give him time, in order that he might declare the interpretation to the king.
Zu Hause erzählte er alles seinen Freunden Hananja, Mischaël und Asarja.
Then Daniel went to his house and informed his friends, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, about the matter,
»Bittet den Gott des Himmels um Gnade«, sagte er zu ihnen, »fleht zu ihm, dass er mir anvertraut, was sich hinter diesem Geheimnis verbirgt! Sonst werden wir zusammen mit den anderen Beratern des Königs umgebracht!«
so that they might request compassion from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
In der Nacht hatte Daniel eine Vision und erfuhr, was der Traum bedeutete. Da pries er den Gott des Himmels:
The Secret Is Revealed to Daniel
Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven;
»Gelobt sei der Name Gottes, jetzt und in alle Ewigkeit! Gott allein gehören Macht und Weisheit.
Daniel said,
“Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever,
For wisdom and power belong to Him.
“Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever,
For wisdom and power belong to Him.
Er ist der Herr der Zeit und bestimmt, was wann geschieht; er setzt Könige ab und überlässt anderen ihren Thron. Den Weisen schenkt er ihre Weisheit und den Verständigen ihren Verstand!
“It is He who changes the times and the epochs;
He removes kings and establishes kings;
He gives wisdom to wise men
And knowledge to men of understanding.
He removes kings and establishes kings;

Er enthüllt die unergründlichsten Geheimnisse und weiß, was im Dunkeln verborgen ist, denn er selbst ist vom Licht umgeben.
“It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things;
He knows what is in the darkness,
And the light dwells with Him.
He knows what is in the darkness,
And the light dwells with Him.
Ja, ich lobe und preise dich, du Gott meiner Vorfahren! Denn du hast mir Weisheit und Kraft geschenkt. Du hast unsere Gebete erhört und mir den Traum des Königs enthüllt!«
“To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise,
For You have given me wisdom and power;
Even now You have made known to me what we requested of You,
For You have made known to us the king’s matter.”

Nun ging Daniel zu Arjoch, der vom König beauftragt worden war, die babylonischen Gelehrten hinzurichten. Daniel bat ihn: »Lass die königlichen Berater nicht umbringen! Führ mich zu Nebukadnezar, denn ich kann ihm sagen, was er geträumt hat und was es bedeutet.«
Therefore, Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and spoke to him as follows: “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon! Take me into the king’s presence, and I will declare the interpretation to the king.”
Arjoch brachte Daniel auf dem schnellsten Weg zum König und berichtete: »Ich habe unter den Verbannten aus Juda einen Mann gefunden, der dem König seinen Traum erklären will!«
Then Arioch hurriedly brought Daniel into the king’s presence and spoke to him as follows: “I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who can make the interpretation known to the king!”
Nebukadnezar wandte sich an Daniel, der Beltschazar genannt wurde: »Kannst du mir denn wirklich sagen, was ich im Traum gesehen habe und was es bedeutet?«
The king said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen and its interpretation?”
»Mein König«, erwiderte Daniel, »hinter dein Geheimnis kann keiner deiner Berater kommen, weder Geisterbeschwörer noch Wahrsager noch Magier.
Daniel answered before the king and said, “As for the mystery about which the king has inquired, neither wise men, conjurers, magicians nor diviners are able to declare it to the king.
Aber es gibt einen Gott im Himmel, der das Verborgene ans Licht bringt. Dieser Gott hat dich, König Nebukadnezar, sehen lassen, was am Ende der Zeit geschehen wird. Und jetzt sage ich dir, welche Vision du im Traum hattest:
“However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days. This was your dream and the visions in your mind while on your bed.
Als du auf deinem Bett lagst, warst du in Gedanken versunken. Dich beschäftigte, was in der Zeit nach deiner Herrschaft kommen würde. Und der Gott, der Geheimnisse enthüllt, hat dich in die Zukunft schauen lassen.
“As for you, O king, while on your bed your thoughts turned to what would take place in the future; and He who reveals mysteries has made known to you what will take place.
Wenn ich dir nun den Traum erzählen kann, dann nicht, weil ich klüger wäre als alle anderen Menschen. Nein, Gott hat es mir offenbart, damit du, mein König, eine Antwort auf das bekommst, was dich so beunruhigt.
“But as for me, this mystery has not been revealed to me for any wisdom residing in me more than in any other living man, but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king, and that you may understand the thoughts of your mind.
In deiner Vision sahst du eine riesige Statue vor dir. Von ihr ging ein greller Glanz aus, und ihre ganze Erscheinung jagte dir Angst ein.
The King’s Dream
“You, O king, were looking and behold, there was a single great statue; that statue, which was large and of extraordinary splendor, was standing in front of you, and its appearance was awesome.
Der Kopf war aus reinem Gold, die Brust und die Arme waren aus Silber, Bauch und Hüften aus Bronze,
“The head of that statue was made of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze,
die Beine aus Eisen und die Füße teils aus Eisen, teils aus Ton.
its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay.
Während du noch schautest, löste sich plötzlich ohne menschliches Zutun ein Stein von einem Berg. Er traf die Füße aus Eisen und Ton und zermalmte sie.
“You continued looking until a stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and crushed them.
Die ganze Statue brach in sich zusammen; Ton, Eisen, Bronze, Silber und Gold zerfielen zu Staub, den der Wind wegblies wie die Spreu von einem Dreschplatz. Nichts war mehr davon zu sehen! Der Stein aber, der die Statue zertrümmert hatte, wuchs zu einem riesigen Berg und breitete sich über die ganze Erde aus.
“Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were crushed all at the same time and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that not a trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
Das war der Traum. Nun werde ich dir, mein König, erklären, was er bedeutet:
The Interpretation — Babylon the First Kingdom
“This was the dream; now we will tell its interpretation before the king.
Du bist der mächtigste König, größer als alle anderen. Dir hat der Gott des Himmels die Herrschaft anvertraut und dir Macht, Stärke und Ruhm geschenkt.
“You, O king, are the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, the strength and the glory;
Alle Menschen, ja sogar die wilden Tiere und die Vögel hat er in deine Hand gegeben. Er hat dich dazu bestimmt, über sie alle zu regieren. Du bist der Kopf aus Gold.
and wherever the sons of men dwell, or the beasts of the field, or the birds of the sky, He has given them into your hand and has caused you to rule over them all. You are the head of gold.
Das Reich, das nach dir kommt, wird schwächer sein als deines. Das dritte, das bronzene, wird die ganze Welt beherrschen.
Medo-Persia and Greece
“After you there will arise another kingdom inferior to you, then another third kingdom of bronze, which will rule over all the earth.
Das vierte ist hart wie Eisen. Es zerschlägt alle anderen Reiche, so wie hartes, schweres Eisen alles zermalmt.
Rome
“Then there will be a fourth kingdom as strong as iron; inasmuch as iron crushes and shatters all things, so, like iron that breaks in pieces, it will crush and break all these in pieces.
Doch du hast gesehen, dass die Füße und Zehen der Statue teils aus Eisen, teils aus Ton waren. Dies bedeutet: Das Reich ist zum Teil stark wie Eisen, zum Teil brüchig wie Ton.
“In that you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but it will have in it the toughness of iron, inasmuch as you saw the iron mixed with common clay.
Die Herrscher wollen ihre Familien durch Heiraten miteinander verbinden, doch ihr Bündnis hält nicht, genauso wenig wie sich Eisen und Ton mischen lassen.
“And in that you saw the iron mixed with common clay, they will combine with one another in the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, even as iron does not combine with pottery.
Noch während diese Könige an der Macht sind, wird der Gott des Himmels ein Reich aufbauen, das niemals zugrunde geht. Keinem anderen Volk wird er jemals die Herrschaft übertragen. Ja, es bringt alle anderen Reiche zum Verschwinden und wird selbst für immer fortbestehen.
The Divine Kingdom
“In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever.
Das, mein König, war der Stein, der ohne menschliches Zutun vom Berg losbrach und die Statue aus Ton, Eisen, Bronze, Silber und Gold zertrümmerte. Ein mächtiger Gott hat dich in die Zukunft sehen lassen. Der Traum ist wahr, und die Deutung trifft ganz sicher zu!«
“Inasmuch as you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold, the great God has made known to the king what will take place in the future; so the dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.”
Da warf König Nebukadnezar sich ehrerbietig vor Daniel nieder. Er befahl, man solle ihm Opfer darbringen und Weihrauch für ihn verbrennen.
Daniel Promoted
Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and did homage to Daniel, and gave orders to present to him an offering and fragrant incense.
Zu Daniel sagte er: »Es gibt keinen Zweifel: Euer Gott ist der größte aller Götter und der Herr über alle Könige! Er bringt Verborgenes ans Licht, sonst hättest du dieses Geheimnis nie aufdecken können.«
The king answered Daniel and said, “Surely your God is a God of gods and a Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery.”
Nebukadnezar gab Daniel eine hohe Stellung am Hof und beschenkte ihn großzügig. Er setzte ihn als Statthalter über die ganze Provinz Babylon ein und ernannte ihn zu seinem obersten Berater.
Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts, and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon.
Auf Daniels Wunsch betraute er Schadrach, Meschach und Abed-Nego mit der Verwaltung der Provinz Babylon. Daniel selbst blieb am Hof des Königs.
And Daniel made request of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego over the administration of the province of Babylon, while Daniel was at the king’s court.
