Und David sprach zu Joab und zu des Volkes Obersten: Gehet hin, zählet Israel von Beer–Seba an bis gen Dan und bringt es zu mir, daß ich wisse, wieviel ihrer sind.
So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Go, number Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a report, that I may know their number.”
Joab sprach: Der HERR tue zu seinem Volk, wie sie jetzt sind, 100 mal soviel; aber, mein Herr König, sind sie nicht alle meines Herrn Knechte? Warum fragt denn mein Herr darnach? Warum soll eine Schuld auf Israel kommen?
But Joab said, “May the Lord add to his people a hundred times as many as they are! Are they not, my lord the king, all of them my lord’s servants? Why then should my lord require this? Why should it be a cause of guilt for Israel?”
Aber des Königs Wort stand fest wider Joab. Und Joab zog aus und wandelte durch das ganze Israel und kam gen Jerusalem
But the king’s word prevailed against Joab. So Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came back to Jerusalem.
und gab die Zahl des gezählten Volks David. Und es waren des ganzen Israels 1100 mal 1000 Mann, die das Schwert auszogen, und Juda’s 470,000 Mann, die das Schwert auszogen.
And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. In all Israel there were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword, and in Judah 470,000 who drew the sword.
Levi aber und Benjamin zählte er nicht unter ihnen; denn es war dem Joab des Königs Wort ein Greuel.
But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, for the king’s command was abhorrent to Joab.
Aber solches gefiel Gott übel, und er schlug Israel.
But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel.
Und David sprach zu Gott: Ich habe schwer gesündigt, daß ich das getan habe. Nun aber nimm weg die Missetat deines Knechtes; denn ich habe sehr töricht getan.
And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”
Und der HERR redete mit Gad, dem Seher Davids, und sprach:
And the Lord spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,
Gehe hin, rede mit David und sprich: So spricht der HERR: Dreierlei lege ich dir vor; erwähle dir eins, daß ich es dir tue.
“Go and say to David, ‘Thus says the Lord, Three things I offer you; choose one of them, that I may do it to you.’”
Und da Gad zu David kam, sprach er zu ihm: So spricht der HERR: Erwähle dir
So Gad came to David and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Choose what you will:
entweder drei Jahre Teuerung, oder drei Monate Flucht vor deinen Widersachern und vor dem Schwert deiner Feinde, daß dich’s ergreife, oder drei Tage das Schwert des HERRN und Pestilenz im Lande, daß der Engel des HERRN verderbe in allen Grenzen Israels. So siehe nun zu, was ich antworten soll dem, der mich gesandt hat.
either three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes while the sword of your enemies overtakes you, or else three days of the sword of the Lord, pestilence on the land, with the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me.”
David sprach zu Gad: Mir ist sehr angst; doch ich will in die Hand des HERRN fallen, denn seine Barmherzigkeit ist sehr groß, und will nicht in Menschenhände fallen.
Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is very great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”
Da ließ der HERR Pestilenz in Israel kommen, daß 70,000 Mann fielen aus Israel.
So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel, and 70,000 men of Israel fell.
Und Gott sandte den Engel gen Jerusalem, sie zu verderben. Und im Verderben sah der HERR darein und reute ihn das Übel, und er sprach zum Engel, dem Verderber: Es ist genug; laß deine Hand ab! Der Engel aber des HERRN stand bei der Tenne Ornans, des Jebusiters.
And God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, the Lord saw, and he relented from the calamity. And he said to the angel who was working destruction, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Und David hob seine Augen auf und sah den Engel des HERRN stehen zwischen Himmel und Erde und sein bloßes Schwert in seiner Hand ausgereckt über Jerusalem. Da fielen David und die Ältesten, mit Säcken bedeckt, auf ihr Antlitz.
And David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, and in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
Und David sprach zu Gott: Bin ich’s nicht, der das Volk zählen hieß? Ich bin, der gesündigt und das Übel getan hat; diese Schafe aber, was haben sie getan? HERR, mein Gott, laß deine Hand wider mich und meines Vaters Haus, und nicht wider dein Volk sein, es zu plagen!
And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave command to number the people? It is I who have sinned and done great evil. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Lord my God, be against me and against my father’s house. But do not let the plague be on your people.”
Und der Engel des HERRN sprach zu Gad, daß er David sollte sagen, daß David hinaufgehen und dem HERRN einen Altar aufrichten sollte in der Tenne Ornans, des Jebusiters.
David Builds an Altar
Now the angel of the Lord had commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and raise an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Also ging David hinauf nach dem Wort Gads, das er geredet hatte in des HERRN Namen.
So David went up at Gad’s word, which he had spoken in the name of the Lord.
Ornan aber, da er sich wandte und sah den Engel, und seine vier Söhne mit ihm, versteckten sie sich; denn Ornan drosch Weizen.
Now Ornan was threshing wheat. He turned and saw the angel, and his four sons who were with him hid themselves.
Als nun David zu Ornan ging, sah Ornan und ward Davids gewahr und ging heraus aus der Tenne und fiel vor David nieder mit seinem Antlitz zur Erde.
As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David and went out from the threshing floor and paid homage to David with his face to the ground.
Und David sprach zu Ornan: Gib mir den Platz der Tenne, daß ich einen Altar dem HERRN darauf baue; um volles Geld sollst du ihn mir geben, auf daß die Plage unter dem Volk aufhöre.
And David said to Ornan, “Give me the site of the threshing floor that I may build on it an altar to the Lord — give it to me at its full price — that the plague may be averted from the people.”
Ornan aber sprach zu David: Nimm dir und mache, mein Herr König, wie dir’s gefällt: siehe, ich gebe das Rind zum Brandopfer und das Geschirr zu Holz und Weizen zum Speisopfer; das alles gebe ich.
Then Ornan said to David, “Take it, and let my lord the king do what seems good to him. See, I give the oxen for burnt offerings and the threshing sledges for the wood and the wheat for a grain offering; I give it all.”
Aber der König David sprach zu Ornan: Nicht also, sondern um volles Geld will ich’s kaufen; denn ich will nicht, was dein ist, nehmen für den HERRN und will’s nicht umsonst haben zum Brandopfer.
But King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will buy them for the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, nor offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
Also gab David Ornan um den Platz Gold, am Gewicht 600 Lot.
Und David baute daselbst dem HERRN einen Altar und opferte Brandopfer und Dankopfer. Und da er den HERRN anrief, erhörte er ihn durch das Feuer vom Himmel auf den Altar des Brandopfers.
Und der HERR sprach zum Engel, daß er sein Schwert in seine Scheide kehrte.
Then the Lord commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.
Zur selben Zeit, da David sah, daß ihn der HERR erhört hatte auf der Tenne Ornans, des Jebusiters, pflegte er daselbst zu opfern.
At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he sacrificed there.
Denn die Wohnung des HERRN, die Mose in der Wüste gemacht hatte, und der Brandopferaltar war zu der Zeit auf der Höhe zu Gibeon.
For the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time in the high place at Gibeon,
