saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”

And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.
Die Hohepriester nahmen die Silberstücke und sagten: Man darf das Geld nicht in den Tempelschatz tun; denn es klebt Blut daran.
But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.”

So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers.
Deshalb heißt dieser Acker bis heute Blutacker.

So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”

For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up.
Während Pilatus auf dem Richterstuhl saß, sandte seine Frau zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Habe du nichts zu schaffen mit jenem Gerechten! Ich habe heute seinetwegen im Traum viel gelitten.
Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”
Inzwischen überredeten die Hohepriester und die Ältesten die Menge, die Freilassung des Barabbas zu fordern, Jesus aber hinrichten zu lassen.
Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
Der Statthalter fragte sie: Wen von beiden soll ich freilassen? Sie riefen: Barabbas!
The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”
Pilatus sagte zu ihnen: Was soll ich dann mit Jesus tun, den man den Christus nennt? Da antworteten sie alle: Ans Kreuz mit ihm!
Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!”
Er erwiderte: Was für ein Verbrechen hat er denn begangen? Sie aber schrien noch lauter: Ans Kreuz mit ihm!
And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”
Als Pilatus sah, dass er nichts erreichte, sondern dass der Tumult immer größer wurde, ließ er Wasser bringen, wusch sich vor allen Leuten die Hände und sagte: Ich bin unschuldig am Blut dieses Menschen. Das ist eure Sache!
Da rief das ganze Volk: Sein Blut — über uns und unsere Kinder!
And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
Darauf ließ er Barabbas frei, Jesus aber ließ er geißeln und lieferte ihn aus zur Kreuzigung.
Da nahmen die Soldaten des Statthalters Jesus, führten ihn in das Prätorium und versammelten die ganze Kohorte um ihn.
Sie zogen ihn aus und legten ihm einen purpurroten Mantel um.
And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
Dann flochten sie einen Kranz aus Dornen; den setzten sie ihm auf das Haupt und gaben ihm einen Stock in die rechte Hand. Sie fielen vor ihm auf die Knie und verhöhnten ihn, indem sie riefen: Sei gegrüßt, König der Juden!
and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head.

and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
Ebenso verhöhnten ihn auch die Hohepriester, die Schriftgelehrten und die Ältesten und sagten:
So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,
Andere hat er gerettet, sich selbst kann er nicht retten. Er ist doch der König von Israel! Er soll jetzt vom Kreuz herabsteigen, dann werden wir an ihn glauben.
“He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
Er hat auf Gott vertraut, der soll ihn jetzt retten, wenn er an ihm Gefallen hat; er hat doch gesagt: Ich bin Gottes Sohn.
He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
Ebenso beschimpften ihn die beiden Räuber, die mit ihm zusammen gekreuzigt wurden.
And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.
Von der sechsten Stunde an war Finsternis über dem ganzen Land bis zur neunten Stunde.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”

And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink.

But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.”
Jesus aber schrie noch einmal mit lauter Stimme. Dann hauchte er den Geist aus.
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
Und siehe, der Vorhang riss im Tempel von oben bis unten entzwei. Die Erde bebte und die Felsen spalteten sich.
And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
Die Gräber öffneten sich und die Leiber vieler Heiligen, die entschlafen waren, wurden auferweckt.
The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,

and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
Als der Hauptmann und die Männer, die mit ihm zusammen Jesus bewachten, das Erdbeben bemerkten und sahen, was geschah, erschraken sie sehr und sagten: Wahrhaftig, Gottes Sohn war dieser!
Auch viele Frauen waren dort und sahen von Weitem zu; sie waren Jesus von Galiläa aus nachgefolgt und hatten ihm gedient.
There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,

among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Gegen Abend kam ein reicher Mann aus Arimathäa namens Josef; auch er war ein Jünger Jesu.
Jesus Is Buried
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.

Er ging zu Pilatus und bat um den Leichnam Jesu. Da befahl Pilatus, ihm den Leichnam zu überlassen.
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
Josef nahm den Leichnam und hüllte ihn in ein reines Leinentuch.
And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud
Dann legte er ihn in ein neues Grab, das er für sich selbst in einen Felsen hatte hauen lassen. Er wälzte einen großen Stein vor den Eingang des Grabes und ging weg.
and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.
Auch Maria aus Magdala und die andere Maria waren dort; sie saßen dem Grab gegenüber.

and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’
Gib also den Befehl, dass das Grab bis zum dritten Tag bewacht wird! Sonst könnten seine Jünger kommen, ihn stehlen und dem Volk sagen: Er ist von den Toten auferstanden. Und dieser letzte Betrug wäre noch schlimmer als alles zuvor.
Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”
Pilatus antwortete ihnen: Ihr sollt eine Wache haben. Geht und sichert das Grab, so gut ihr könnt!
