“Therefore my anxious thoughts make me answer,
Because of the turmoil within me.

Denn ich muß hören, wie man mich straft und tadelt; aber der Geist meines Verstandes soll für mich antworten.
Weißt du nicht, daß es allezeit so gegangen ist, seitdem Menschen auf Erden gewesen sind:
“Do you not know this of old,
Since man was placed on earth,

daß der Ruhm der Gottlosen stehet nicht lange und die Freude des Heuchlers währet einen Augenblick?
That the triumphing of the wicked is short,
And the joy of the hypocrite is but for a moment?

Wenngleich seine Höhe in den Himmel reicht und sein Haupt an die Wolken rührt,
Though his haughtiness mounts up to the heavens,

Es ist keine Finsternis da, die ihn verdecken möchte. Es wird ihn ein Feuer verzehren, das nicht angeblasen ist; und wer übrig ist in seiner Hütte, dem wird’s übel gehen.
